Heath Hopper is in his 3rd year with the staff at DCHS, and shares some common history with one other staff member. As a student at South Panola high school, he played baritone under the leadership of a young band director by the name of Dennis Cox. Heath’s own experience as a high school band member led him to pursue a career in music. After receiving his bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of Mississippi, Heath moved on to Florida State University where he earned a masters degree in Instrumental Music Education. Not satisfied with mere class work during this time, he also spent four summers performing in the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (’93 -’96). His love of marching has led to a part-time career as instructor for several DCI bands around the country including Magic of Orlando, Phantom Regiment, Corpsvets and The Bluecoats. Before coming to Desoto Central, he first taught band at Olive Branch Middle School, then moved to Cobb county Georgia to instruct at Campbell High School and South Cobb High School. He and his wife Varina live in Hernando with a Jack Russell terrier named Bruce and their daughter, Samara.
Have you been wondering what happened to the copies of the 2008 Band Video that were promised after the banquet? Well wonder no more! We have finally finished the complete update and have begun burning DVDs! The original 30 minute program is now enhanced with nearly one-and-a-half hours of extras, including the complete band night performances, student interviews, staff moments, humorous happenings and a final walk down memory lane.
You can begin picking up your copy from the band hall on Friday, May 16th. For those who placed an order at the band banquet, you will need to bring your payment (if have not previously paid) when you pick up your DVD. If you would like to order a copy, email me at dwofford@dcspride.com, and include your name, your student’s name and the number of copies you desire. You may then pick up your video from Mr. Cox. The cost is $20 per copy, due at pick up. Make checks payable to ‘DCHS Band’. Thanks for your patience and enjoy the show!
All those who are planning to raise money by working the fireworks stand this summer are required to attend a meeting to be held Thursday, May 15th at 6:30pm. THIS IS A MANDATORY MEETING, so don’t miss out on this great opportunity to fund raise for youself. YOU MUST BE PRESENT ON THURSDAY TO PARTICIPATE!

The big event is here! Band Banquet 2008 will be held Friday, May 2nd at the Southaven Arena on Hwy 51 in Southaven.
The doors open at 5:30pm with festivities beginning at 6:30pm. The arena will also be open from 9am til 2pm for setup and table decorating. Don’t miss out on this once a year time of fellowship, food, and great fun as we look back on another outstanding year in the Desoto Central Band program!
Any girl that made the colorguard or is an alternate, please show up on Monday, April 28th, for a meeting from 7:30-8:30 in the band room.
The senior band picture location has changed. The grounds around the Snowden House are unavailable due to a wedding. All senior band members are now requested to meet at Saucier Park in Southaven. This park is located behind (on the south side) the Southaven City Hall building. Click on the map to see full size for directions. We will still meet at 2 pm on Saturday, April 12th. It should not take more than 30 minutes to complete the task, so don’t be late!! If you have questions, contact Mr. Wofford at 901-488-6439. We will see you there!
All senior band members are requested to gather at Snowden Grove Park for a group photo at 2pm. More details to follow.
